The role of the Cell Maintenance Lead is to implement and/or to maintain and continuously improve the maintenance planning and scheduling (MPS) and breakdown elimination (BDE) standard work processes (SWPs) for their area, and to coach Cell teams to improve technical capability, and to provide a continuity link to other Progressive Maintenance (PM) systems.
MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES & SCOPE
Purpose of the Maintenance Lead Role
● To ensure the Cell is not constrained due to the lack of technical capability or knowledge
● To ensure all maintenance tasks are planned, organized, and executed with the least effort at optimised cost
● To transfer knowledge to the Cell teams, and to ensure that the proper level of skills and qualification are successfully deployed Cell to deliver cell team goals and objectives
● To provide coaching, teaching, and assessment of the Progressive Maintenance (PM) and the Autonomous Maintenance (AM) standard work process implementation
● To promote reapplication of approaches across the site and the network.
● To ensure alignment with the Cell lead and AM teams, supporting the training and development of equipment and process system owners
Drive for results
● Reduce the number of breakdowns due to improper maintenance overhaul/restoration procedures
● Improve downtime due to scheduled maintenance being optimized, reduced, and at a target to deliver Cell goals in support of the compelling business need (CBN)
● Updated standards and procedures; maintenance costs (parts and labour) reduced in Cell
● Equipment performance is controlled and predictable due to a percent increase of planned maintenance work (=> 85% planned work and 85% PR and < 8 unplanned stops/day is the goal)
Leadership
● Actively participating in Cell daily direction setting (DDS) meetings and in the execution of the daily plan, including reporting on the results for the previous 24 hours:
- Maintenance planning and scheduling (MPS) in-process measure (exact number of planned maintenance activities executed, number of planned maintenance tasks created / modified)
- Number of breakdowns and insights from the completed planned maintenance card(s) / maintenance logs
- Review of defects
Planning and scheduling maintenance work
● Reviewing and prioritizing Maximo work orders and notifications within 24 hours of generation
● Ensuring that the work order backlog is current and sorted for reporting, and managing how best to meet the compelling business need (CBN)
● Managing planned maintenance work using SIMPTWW (safety, information, material, people, tools, where, and when)
● Ensuring that the job plan archive is maintained on Maximo
● Leading the review of the previous job completion results, other maintenance activities, and the current day’s plan in the daily meeting; adjusting plans accordingly and based upon scheduled work, scheduled work completion, and a break in work
● Actively supporting and coordinating with the Cell lead / process lead / Cell team on the planned stop, incorporating Maximo work orders and maintenance tasks into the plan
● Leading the scheduling of maintenance work for the next week during the weekly planning meeting
● Leading the scheduling of maintenance work in the monthly meeting to schedule maintenance work for the next month, as dictated by the annual maintenance plan and previously identified work
● Leading and supporting the investigation of breakdowns and the implementation of corrective actions to prevent reoccurrence
● Leading optimization with the Cell lead / process lead of the start-up and shutdown of the line and the major maintenance interventions
● Ensuring the revision and updating of maintenance technical documentation occurs as necessary
● Creating one point lessons (OPLs), and training and qualifying the Cell team in maintenance activities
● Developing and updating the annual maintenance plan and calendar
Tracking and reporting maintenance indicator results and in-process measures
● Ensuring that maintenance output and in-process measures are tracked and kept current
● Driving to ensure that activities or the lack thereof that drive maintenance indicator results in the wrong direction, are corrected or are brought to the attention of the appropriate resource
● Ensuring that results of maintenance key performance indicators (KPIs) and in-process measures are used to assess the progress of the maintenance planning and scheduling (MPS) system, and to determine equipment reliability — results are shared with department leadership in the monthly meeting
● Monitoring the health of the progressive maintenance (PM), standard work processes (SWPs), and putting corrective actions in place with the Cell team:
- Breakdown elimination (BDE)
- Maintenance planning and scheduling (MPS)
- Support to Autonomous Maintenance (AM): clean, inspect, lubricate (CIL); centreline (CL); defect handling (DH); including being the AM Step 4 subject matter resource (SMR)
- Workshop and facilities
- Lubrication
- Maintenance costs
- Parts usage and life
Developing improvement plans
● Identifying improvement through the tracking of maintenance indicators and in-process measures
● Identifying losses and improvement themes to eliminate losses
● Owning, developing, and tracking improvement theme action plan
Champion and lead the continuous improvement process
● Ensuring all equipment design change proposals (corrective maintenance) and adding / deleting / modifying work follow-up change management (CM) procedures
● Critiquing all work executed, and updating or revising work plans, as necessary
● Maintaining technical documentation to ensure that equipment drawings and schematics are complete, accurate, easy to find, and easy to use
● Managing the relationship that exists with the storeroom in order to identify obsolete parts, poor quality parts, ideal in-stock numbers, the required delivery time of parts, etc.
● Updating engineering drawings and standards, and feeding back to the owner
● Managing the link to engineering drawing control, and establishing a maintenance technical documentation owner
● Providing feedback to design (FtD) on any new equipment or on line speed-ups
● Participating in vendor acceptance testing or other project work on new products or equipment
● Participating in Progressive Maintenance (PM) Pillar work as required, and owning a site PM system as required
Scope:
● Cell location within a factory – typically a line or group of lines and/or or a discrete process step within production\
CANDIDATE PROFILE
EDUCATION, LANGUAGE, SKILLS & QUALIFICATIONS
- High School diploma minimum and higher education qualification preferred e.g. Engineering or Process Diploma or degree
- Maintenance training and basic integrated work system (BCOS) / high performance organization (HPO) training
- Strong organizational and technical skills
- Strong communication / coaching / training skills
- Technical and practical equipment and tool skills
- Autonomous Maintenance (AM) and Progressive Maintenance (PM) Steps 0-4: can teach work point analysis (WPA) and understands line transformations – or capable to learn work processes quickly
- Knowledge of AM and PM visual standards
- Understanding of problem-solving processes
- Maintenance management information system knowledge and storeroom skills
- Basic PC skills
ESSENTIAL EXPERIENCE & KNOWLEDGE / TECHNICAL OR FUNCTIONAL COMPETENCIES
- Ability to influence technicians, Cell leads, and process engineers, as required
- Ability to teach, coach, and develop others
- Have on-the-floor technical credibility with the people doing the work
- Have a passion for the work, and the drive and ability to help others see the losses
- Be willing to stay in the role for a minimum of three years, if necessary
- Have integrated work system (BCOS) and operational experience and skills, or the ability to quickly build the skills of at least the phase in which the plant or facility is currently working
- Have had a Cell assignment in manufacturing, and be capable of operating the equipment and of owning an area or piece of equipment, as necessary
- Possess a flexible mindset, e.g., a willingness to flow with the work, and to cover training and breaks, as required, to deliver the Cell key performance indicators (KPIs)
- Be willing to actively participate in planned stops and changeovers (COs), flowing to the work as required
Note: Having a work process improvement (WPI) Level 4 capability is highly desirable (does need to be at this level within six months of taking the role) to both reduce effort and optimize maintenance tasks
