About the role:

 

As part of Barry Callebaut’s sustainability program (“Forever Chocolate”) a 2025 goal has been set to work on the 4 pillars of Prospering farmers, Zero Child Labor, Thriving Nature and 100% Sustainable Chocolate. In the context of our Thriving Nature pillar, and the commitments of becoming forest and carbon positive by 2025, we are currently looking to recruit a Sustainability Expert Forest and Carbon. The incumbent will report into the Director, Global Ingredients & Learning Pilots, and will be closely working with the entire sustainability team at our HQ, and our teams in cocoa origin countries.

 

Key Tasks and Responsibilities:

 

  • Support the cocoa and ingredients teams in driving the implementation of our zero deforestation strategy.
  • Drive the implementation of our carbon strategy, including driving internal carbon reduction plans, and CO2 footprint compensation through insetting and offsetting projects.
  • Work closely with the monitoring and data team and the ingredients sustainability team to strengthen our work on proving deforestation free supply chains.
  • Drive environmental projects with research institutes, certification bodies, internal and external customers, suppliers and other key stakeholders.
  • Represent Barry Callebaut in technical working groups of the CFI, and support the implementation of commitments made in the context of the Cocoa and Forest Initiative.
  • Work closely with our Communications and reporting team to regularly report on our progress against our carbon and forest objectives.
  • Support the development and implementation of a quarterly carbon reporting tool.
  • Closely work with the cocoa pilot project managers in origin countries to assess the environmental impact of agroforestry systems, adoption of low carbon technologies and other activities in the pilot projects.

 

About you:

 

  • Master’s degree in environmental science, environmental engineering, agronomy or similar field.
  • 3- 5 years of experience in an Environmental/Sustainability role
  • In-depth understanding of agricultural land use / deforestation related set of problems, including key drivers and reduction strategies
  • In-depth understanding  of carbon assessments, GHG accounting, climate change adaptation and mitigation strategies, life cycle assessments
  • Excellent verbal and written communication in at least English and French
  • High level of numerical and analytical skills
  • The role might require travel (about 20% of time) including to cocoa producing countries.
