Position title: Manager, Quality Assurance

About the role: 

The Quality Assurance Manager is responsible for leading, developing, and managing the quality activities for the American Almond business as they pertain to quality systems, policies, assurance/control, food safety, testing and inspection, audits (internal and external), CAPA.  The QA Manager is responsible for management, coaching and the development of the local QA team.  Additionally, the QA Manager is expected to educate and train site employees/personnel and to monitor and assure the organization’s quality policy, strategy and vision and ensure site compliance for such.  You will act as a resource and support to other functional areas (R&D, operations, sourcing, etc.) staff, customers as required/requested.  This role is part of the American Almond leadership team.


Key responsibilities include: 

  • Internal: The quality assurance manager will interact with other functional areas within the organization, at all levels.  This role is part of the site leadership team and partners with Operations, R&D and Sourcing.
  • External:  The quality assurance manager will interact with suppliers, customers, regulatory, auditors, and contractors.
  • Reporting:  The quality assurance manager reports to the General Manager and the Quality Assurance Director, Americas
  • Lead quality and food safety continuous improvement projects for American Almond.
  • Create Material Quality Management Standards for incoming materials; create inbound raw material verification/receiving processes and sampling plan (supplier, BC or 3rd party). 
  • Manage pre-shipment and inbound verification process by setting sampling frequencies based on supplier and MRA requirements to ensure compliance with the Material Quality Management Standards.
  • Drive improvements to Barry Callebaut raw material specifications through testing trend analysis.
  • Initiates escalation and creates supplier non conformances for supplier corrective actions based on specification deviations.
  • Partner with key internal stakeholders to implement changes, new processes, and products in a safe manner and implement product quality conformance systems.  Responsible to provide QFS requirements for engineering projects.
  • Provide leadership and technical expertise during incident investigation and risk analysis as well as provides recommendations for appropriate resolution.  Lead incident management process and provide recommendation for product disposition.
  • Collaborate with internal leadership team to drive standardization and create best work practices.
  • Direct quality activities such as audits, quality system and quality assurance/control activities and 
  • training, monitoring and compliance to such. Lead corrective action and preventative action programs. 
  • Lead food safety initiatives such as HACCP, GMP and training, monitoring and compliance to such.
  • Lead and manage the site Sensory Program.
  • Manage, coach and develop departmental team.
  • Lead site quality and food safety management review process to identify improvement opportunities for quality and food safety management systems.
  • Always conduct self in a safe manner as per Barry-Callebaut Policy.
  • Committed to providing a safe food product and works within all regulatory requirements.
  • Deliver against key metrics reflected in IFP and business objectives. Manage department budget.
  • Perform and participate in projects as assigned (committees, continuous improvement, etc).
  • Communicate issues in a timely, accurate and professional manner – verbally, email, databases SAP, etc.
  • Committed to providing a safe food product.
  • Perform all other related duties as requested/required.
  • Ability to work in a manufacturing environment and be present on the plant floor.
  • Regulated industry, certain laws and regulatory requirements will apply. Works within all regulatory requirements


  • Degree in Food Science, Food Safety, Biology, Engineering, Chemistry or related technical field

Work Experience:

  • 5+ years of food plant experience related to food safety or quality and food safety management system with proven capabilities leading others.
  • Demonstrated leadership, critical thinking capabilities and problem-solving skills.  Ability to influence others.
  • Must be able to draw on personal experience and apply own judgment to reach firm decisions.
  • Knowledge of tree nut processing and experience in a tree nut processing environment highly preferred. Know and understand food safety principles: HACCP, GMPs, etc.
  • Ability to adhere to GMP practices and all other food safety requirements.
  • Know and understand Laboratory Safety Principles, GLPs and safety procedures.
  • Know and understand food science/chemistry principles.
  • Know and understand Quality Assurance and Control principles as they relate to the daily QA activities assigned.


Additional Requirements:

  • High Level of Computer Competency (SAP, Microsoft Office).
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Experience in the Food Industry or related GMP regulated industry highly preferred.
  • Understanding of Food Safety, HACCP, and GMP principles.
  • Experience in implementation or management of GFSI Quality Systems; ISO, FSSC 22000/ISO9000/BRC/SQF, Kosher, Regulatory highly preferred.
  • PCQI highly preferred.
