About the role

As part of Barry Callebaut’s sustainability program (“Forever Chocolate”) a 2025 goal has been set to work on the 4 pillars of Prospering farmers, Zero Child Labor, Thriving Nature and 100% Sustainable Chocolate. In the context of our Thriving Nature pillar, and the commitments of becoming forest and carbon positive by 2025, we are currently looking to recruit a carbon and forest project officer. The incumbent will report into the Carbon and Forest Manager, and will be closely working with the entire sustainability team at our HQ, and our teams in cocoa origin countries.

 

Key responsibilities include

  • Carbon and forest project portfolio management: be responsible for the management and coordination of the Thriving Nature carbon and forest project portfolio which includes flagship projects, landscapes projects, customer and Cocoa Horizons projects. Further, it includes managing the current portfolio as well as contributing to its extension.
  • Developing and working closely together with restoration and biochar projects.
  • Contribute to the management of environmental projects and partnerships: environmental projects with research institutes, certification bodies, internal and external customers, suppliers and other key stakeholders.
  • Focal point for execution leads in the origin countries: work as the go-to person at the headquarters and manage timeline, deliverables and milestones centrally.
  • Reporting of progress within the Sustainability team: work closely with the monitoring and data team and execution leads to strengthen our work on getting to carbon and forest positive.
  • Reporting of progress beyond the Sustainability team : work closely with our Communications and reporting team to regularly report on our progress against our carbon and forest objectives.

 

About you

  • Excellent project management skills
  • In-depth understanding of environmental topics, agricultural land use and deforestation
  • In-depth understanding of carbon assessments, climate change adaptation and mitigation strategies, life cycle assessments TECHNICAL & FUNCTIONAL COMPETENCIES
  • Good numerical and analytical skills
  • Systemic and conceptual thinking, ability to manage data and information flows
  • Ability to operate in a multi-country & -cultural environment
  • Ability to work closely with large and complex remote teams, without hierarchical authority
  • Ability to self-organize and follow up on deliverables
  • Ability to keep a good overview when managing projects with multiple stakeholders
  • “Can-do” attitude and dynamic working style
  • Hands on, ability to roll up sleeves and get operational things done
  • Well organized and structured
  • Very independent and persistent in collecting information
  • Very good communication skills
