About the Role

The R&D Packaging Lead EMEA establishes packaging solutions and systems with optimal effectiveness under general supervision of the Regional R&D Vice President. He/she develops and specifies new and revised packaging solutions and implements process improvements within the regional scope. He/she has in-depth knowledge of industry regulatory requirements for packaging components and their related testing and documentation. He/she is responsible for strategic planning & management of the regional packaging development organization & functions:


  • Leads and further lifts BC’s R&D packaging approach from local and transactional to more regional and strategic.
  • Creates a long-term Packaging EMEA Strategy and further increases effectiveness of the regional R&D Packaging organization.
  • Develops and executes packaging programs & projects across all product categories (except cocoa) to achieve agreed objectives within the Food Manufacturers and Gourmet Business Units.
  • Key activities: to generate cost savings through smarter and optimized packaging solutions, reduce packaging customer complaints, introduce sustainable packaging solutions and add business value through packaging big bet innovation and renovation projects.


Key Responsibilities include

  • Strategic Packaging Lead for EMEA:

Coordinates all packaging activities (new developments and continuous improvement) and major projects within the EMEA region and delivers upon agreed key business objectives. Establishes one uniform packaging approach and way of working for Gourmet, FM and Decorations & Specialties for the EMEA region. Optimizes packaging work instructions, shortens development timelines, improves documentation and systems to enhance speed to market and assure optimal front end execution. Drafts, aligns and implements the EMEA Packaging strategy and aligns with key stakeholders throughout the organization.

Creates cooperative working relationships with key internal business and project functions (R&D, Engineering, Marketing, Sales, OSCO, Sourcing, QA…) 


  • EMEA specific Packaging Projects Accountability: Implements key packaging Continuous improvement projects, Renovation/Innovation Projects and supports regional and local packaging projects:


  • Defines the specific packaging needs depending on business and customer requirements
  • Develops packaging and product project objectives and strategies in response to business initiatives
  • Identifies technical and financial feasibility on packaging programs & projects
  • Validates established and agreed packaging equipment investment proposals; including IP approval 
  • Oversees packaging complaints and defines improvement roadmap and implementation plan
  • Oversees 2025 sustainability roadmap and implementation plan
  • Plans and executes strategic big bet projects with a high degree of autonomy
  • Conducts analysis of results and translates into actionable recommendations
  • Networks with other regional/global leads and helps to build the overall packaging strategy
  • Networks with external packaging partners (suppliers, fora, governance bodies,...)


About You

  • Technical Master’s Degree in Science or Engineering
  • 8-15 years of relevant R&D/engineering working experience
  • Professional Packaging experience or technical savvy and quick learner
  • Team coaching and steering skills
  • Business leadership skills
  • Complex project management and communication skills
  • Excellent knowledge of business English


Regular travel (20% - 30%)

Location is R&D Technical Center -  Wieze, Belgium
