POSITION TITLE: Director, Sourcing - Sugar Trading

REPORTING TO: Vice President Sourcing - Americas



Job Summary:

This role manages the strategic sourcing of sugar and other semi-finished products as well as the futures market risk position and physical sugar trading in the Americas. Have full EBIT responsibility for Sugar Sourcing in all plants for the Americas as well as third-party sugar trading activities within the region. Manage day-to-day operations related to the third-party business. You will participate, contribute, and lead the sugar sourcing categories to ensure smooth coordination and internal communication with other Barry Callebaut departments.

Essential Functions:

  • Manage the supply of sugar for all Barry Callebaut factories in the Americas
  • Lead the strategic buying of third-party semi-finished products and sugar
  • Intimate knowledge of Mexican sugar market and suppliers, including but not limited to the following: IMMEX vs. Local vs. Export, white premium, Swaps, pedimentos, estandard vs. refined, and SNIIM pricing
  • Actively trade futures for hedging and speculative purposes surrounding sugar
  • Manage the sugar sourcing position for the Americas within Group limits and controls
  • Price sugar components in chocolate in close collaboration with pricing team
  • Represent BC in sugar committees and actively network within the sugar industry
  • Provide market intelligence to chocolate and cocoa customers either through visits or conference calls
  • Coordinate purchases of sugar and semi-finished products with BC Sourcing trading desk
  • Regularly exchange market and supplier information with BC Sourcing trading desk
  • Liaise with BC Sourcing analyst team to provide them information on the sugar market in the Americas
  • Lead the team within SAP contract management, supplier shipment coordination, and accounts payable monitoring
  • Support new sugar supplier approvals/re-approvals, as well as maintain supplier documentation through SRM portal
  • Ensure supplier adherence to contract Terms and Conditions
  • Effectively manage working capital, sugar inventory levels, for the region within Group targets
  • Lead and ensure end-of-month activities are successfully executed in support of financial reporting
  • Assist with supply strategy development, project, and physical position management
  • Work in coordination with AP/AR departments to monitor and ensure payments to Trading Partner and receivables are executed timely
  • Lead a team of 3-5 employees in multiple locations
  • Perform other duties as required



  • Bachelor’s Degree in Business, Economics, Supply Chain, Food Science or other relevant majors required.
  • Master’s Degree strongly preferred.

Work Experience:

  • At least 5 years of experience as a soft commodities trader specializing in sugar
  • 5 - 10 years of experience in Risk Management assessing and approving commodity trade transactions
  • At least 5 years of experience leading people
