Job Description
The Regional Regulatory Affairs Director ensures the Barry Callebaut Americas region has all information to apply and operate in compliance to regulatory requirements in the region. This role ensures that all applicable food regulatory requirements are incorporated into the BC systems procedures, ensures upcoming requirements and opportunities are identified and communicated to all relevant stakeholders in the business to achieve timely and cost-effective compliance and support in issue management. This role plays a lead role externally in industry organizations, monitoring and influencing the external policy environment to identify opportunities and threats timely and to support the business activities. This role manages a team of 3 people regionally deployed covering North and South America, reporting directly into the Global Regulatory lead and indirectly to the VP, Quality Americas.
Responsibilities
Driving Compliance to Regulatory Requirements
● Assess & communicate the impact of changing regulations & participate in defining implementation processes to ensure compliance
● Provide clear and timely advice on the strategy to ensure compliance to new and existing regulations and guidelines.
● Manage and/or support regulatory related projects and ensure its results are compliant, within the required timelines, with added value to the overall business objectives
● Develop, review and approve proper and well structured operational documentation & communication about food regulatory matters, enabling the business to respond to suppliers and customers.
● Validate the accuracy and appropriateness of the systems, tools and data used and ensure relevance to ensure compliance
● Support in issue management related to Regulatory related topics.
Regulatory Knowledge Building
● Drive the awareness and understanding of regulatory requirements and opportunities in the organization by advising, training and coaching in food regulatory topics.
● Ensure proper communication and alignment with the Global functions and internal stakeholders
● Ensure knowledge and know-how within area of expertise is accessible to all relevant roles in the business, continuously updated and relevant
● Manage the availability of specialized training, material on current and new regulatory requirements and support to internal and external customers.
External Stakeholder Management
● Build and maintain relations with selected external parties relevant to new and existing food regulations in government, academia and industry
● Influence the government policies and regulatory agenda directly and through trade associations to protect and promote BC’s best interest
● Participate and take leadership role in professional associations and industry groups
● Participate and actively manage the development of new regulations, guidelines and/or standards through the BC presence in all relevant organizations and institutions.
● Use networks to pre-empt both threats and opportunities for the business
Qualifications
● Bachelor/master’s degree in a food science/chemistry, food regulatory, food engineering or nutrition
● Excellent communication skills: fluent in English. Proficiency in other languages is a strong asset (French, Spanish)
● 10+ years of relevant working experience in a regulatory position and a quality assurance Food manufacturing environment. Corporate, international experience would be an asset.
● In-depth knowledge of food regulations and food industry operations
● Regulatory history, practice, requirements and precedents specific to food
● Regulatory agency structure & processes
● SAP knowledge would be an asset as regulatory controls are often programed into our global automated systems
