POSITION TITLE: Food Safety Specialist


REPORTING TO: Quality Assurance Manager







The Food Safety Specialist is responsible for the coordination, execution, and implementation of key microbiology and food safety programs for the site, which include Raw Material Sampling Plan, Finished Product Sampling Plan, Environmental Monitoring, and other food safety initiatives and certifications. The Food Safety Specialist will perform key functions for quality and supply chain. The Specialist must be able to communicate and interact with all departments and levels of personnel and assimilate pertinent information and data. The Food Safety Specialist is responsible to ensure all products produced at this site meet all local and federal regulations and is safe and wholesome. In addition, meets all requirements mandated by BRC.


Essential Functions:

  • Ensure GMP and food safety requirements and policies are implemented and respected
  • Capable of implementing and coordinating food safety programs (HACCP, Environmental Monitoring, Pest Management, Raw Material and Finished Product Sampling Plan) for the production facility
  • Certified Preventive Controls Qualified Individual (PCQI) and Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points (HACCP) preferred
  • Support the implementation of corrective actions associated with identified gaps (both internal and external)
  • Ensure data is entered into the Quality Module of SAP accurately and in a timely manner.
  • Ensure the correct transactions in SAP are conducted and completed as required (releases, blocks, returns)
  • Issue Certificate of Analysis to customers and keep record of the history of recorded analysis results
  • Perform trending analysis; identify non-conformances and opportunities for improvement for raw material analysis, finished item analysis and the Environmental Monitoring Program
  • Management of customer documentation requirements for products being supplied from the facility, including bills of lading, packing lists, delivery notes, and quality certificates
  • Work closely with Supply Chain to ensure incoming ingredients, chemicals, and packaging materials are sampled, inspected, and approved for use in the plant
  • Provide support to correct key food safety complaints
  • Continuous improvement of Quality Culture
  • In the absence of the QA manager, represent all QA and Food Safety Systems and Processes




Education & Work Experience

  • Bachelor’s Degree-Food Science, Biology, Microbiology, or Chemistry
  • At least 3 years of experience as QA/ QC including experience in the food industry
  • Knowledge of HACCP, GMPs, Environmental Monitoring, and microbiological testing
  • Knowledge and experience of BRC Certification and/or other GFSI audit schemes
  • Excellent communication skills and a team player
  • Strong leadership abilities
  • Understanding of government regulations in relation to food processing
  • Strong personal computer skills i.e. Word, Excel, PowerPoint, SAP

  • Willing to work weekend and evening shifts as required
