The Food Safety Manager is responsible for developing, implementing, and maintaining a comprehensive Food Safety Management System (FSMS) to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements and industry standards. This role leads HACCP implementation, risk assessments, and continuous improvement initiatives to uphold the highest levels of food safety and product quality. Additionally, the manager fosters a strong food safety culture through staff training and ensures all practices meet or exceed industry standards.

 

Key responsibilities

 

  • Develop and implement the plant’s food safety strategy aligned with corporate standards.
  • Manage food safety policies, procedures, and programs, ensuring compliance with HACCP, CFIA, FDA, and other regulations.
  • Conduct regular internal audits, inspections, and coordinate corporate food safety audits.
  • Lead HACCP implementation, risk assessments, and validation of CCP/OPRP and allergen controls.
  • Monitor sanitation and environmental programs, addressing non-conformities promptly.
  • Collaborate with production and quality teams to identify and mitigate food safety risks.
  • Investigate food safety incidents, recalls, and contamination issues; implement corrective and preventive actions.
  • Oversee pest management programs and ensure compliance with GMP practices.
  • Train and educate staff on food safety, hygiene, and regulatory requirements to foster a strong food safety culture.
  • Maintain accurate documentation of food safety activities, audits, and compliance records.
  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives to enhance food safety and product quality.
  • Provide regular food safety performance updates to senior management.

 

About you

 

  • Bachelor’s degree in Food Science, Microbiology, Biology, or a related discipline.
  • 7+ years of experience in food safety or quality assurance, including 3+ years in a leadership role.
  • Strong knowledge and hands-on experience with HACCP program design, implementation, and management.
  • HACCP certification (International HACCP Alliance) and PCQI certification required; SQF Practitioner and internal auditor credentials are a plus.
  • Familiarity with CFIA/FDA regulations and food manufacturing standards.
  • High proficiency in computer systems and manufacturing data tools (SAP, MES, Power BI, Salesforce).
  • Skilled in Office 365 applications and capable of running analytics and generating reports.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to lead training, collaborate across teams, and interact with regulatory bodies.
  • Strong problem-solving, analytical, and decision-making abilities with attention to detail.
  • Ability to influence and coach at all organizational levels while fostering a food safety culture.
  • Demonstrated teamwork, adaptability, and alignment with company mission and values.
