About the role

Sustainability Manager contributes to the company’s profit by managing the implementation of Barry Callebaut’s sustainability strategy in Indonesia. This includes full P&L responsibility, managing staff, performance management of projects and standard operations, accomplishing business objectives, management of BC’s presence in the local cocoa sustainability ecosystem, and supporting M&E, client relations, and R&D.

 

The implementation of sustainability strategy in Indonesia aims at creating a positive return for the company, fulfill bean sourcing sustainability specs and volumes, fulfilling client and donor contracts and achieving a positive impact for the performance of farmer organization performance and livelihoods of individual farmers.

 

This comprises implementation of certification, productivity service delivery and community development activities in the farmer groups as per planning imperatives following business and development objectives. The latter should follow the trend of Action – Adoption – Impact.

 

From a program perspective, the position is responsible for implementation in-origin of Cocoa Horizons program, Farm Service Delivery Models as well as projects of clients.

 

The position operates within the boundaries of cocoa sourcing in Indonesia and is based at PCI, but responsible for sustainability operations in all business units in that origin.

 

The position requires excellent coordination with all Global Sustainability team functions and origin BUs administration.

 

Key responsibilities include

  • Design, plan, manage and supervise the implementation of National Sustainability Program via direct reports, partners institutions, and other BC units, to achieve the financial and action/adoption/ impact targets in short and long-term (including site visits).
  • Budget development and cost control of all sustainability initiatives. Monitor, analyze and course-adjust P&L.  When applicable, supervise credit reimbursement rate of farmers in the program. Manage and adapt credit reimbursement strategy.
  • Monitor and report on the performance of national sustainability program against agreed financial and non-financial targets, including timely financial reporting and non-financial reporting, internally, for clients and for other partners, e.g. donors.
  • Maintaining relationships with partner institutions (clients, donors, NGOs, GOs), and contributing to establishing new partnerships, including client visits, to foster a constructive partnership towards reaching the targets, and as required. 
  • Coordinate and communicate with internal parties on sustainability activity and coordination/administration/ financial reporting. Participate in global team efforts.
  • Development of the team as required for today's and tomorrow’s best performance to implement the sustainability strategy (contribute to the recruitment process, team training, coaching of team members, etc.). Cultivate budget ownership.
  • Regularly evaluate the program critically to come up with a better value proposition for the business, as well as day to day analyzing and problem-solving. Support innovation, R&D and team effort for leadership in sustainability impact.
  • Define needs and support the development of an annual training program and diverse curricula for the local team, farmer trainers and farmers.  Coordinate training for local agents regarding needs for compliance, community and productivity activities resulting in accredited agents. Provide reporting on this training for internal management, client and donors.

About you

  • MSc Degree, in Agriculture/Business Administration, Management
  • 8-10 years in the value chain or comparable program management position
  • Knowledge or specific business understanding
