About the role:

The Lab Technician will provide admin support in quality checks to ensure compliance with Barry Callebaut and customer requirements. He/she will react and follow up on the results, all whilst respecting and promoting people safety standards.


Responsibilities include:


Execute and drive excellence in quality analysis

  • Providing administrative support in the execution of quality sampling plans (micro, analytical, sensorial) to ensure compliance of production environment, process, raw materials, packaging, rework and products in the most efficient way and release conform.
  • Ensure timely execution of quality analysis by colleagues, agreed with customers + afterwards request and send Certificate of Analysis
  • Review analysis results and supplier documents for raw materials and packaging materials to evaluate conformance. React (disapprove or approve with derogation) and follow up with suppliers when deviations occur
  • Propose decisions on disposition of non-conform raw materials, packaging, rework, finished products, processes and production environment
  • Track, trace and put on hold when and as required
  • Participate in BC lab proficiency testing and implement required corrective actions
  • Respect and apply good food safety and good laboratory practices
  • Adhere to BC and legal (people) safety rules and identify and execute measures to improve safety and reduce risks in the labs and in the BC environment in general
  • Ensure use and application of BC sensory methods and protocols
  • Evaluate sensory target metrics of the site and react and follow up to restore compliance
  • Ensure the sensory consistency of the finished products
  • Manage the sensory approval process of supplier ingredients. React and follow up with suppliers when deviations occur
  • Support the plant on questions related to sensory quality regarding expired materials, ingredient non-conformance, substitution, complaints
  • Participate on a daily basis in Sensory Panel Sessions
  • Provide training to incoming staff into analysis, quality plans, quality systems and safety requirements
  • Provide expert advice if and when required
  • Contribute to cost and efficiency improvement activities, taking into account safety, legal and quality requirements 
  • Replace Lab Technicians in sickness/holidays and perform practical testing of samples.


Drive and support Implementation of new or improved customer requirements

  • Participate in internal audits related to HACCP, food safety, sustainability and quality management system
  • Carry out trend analysis and statistical data review to drive improvement (eg first time right)
  • Execute and follow up corrective actions and verify effectiveness of implemented measures in a lab environment.

About you

  • Bachelor or Master in Food Science, Chemistry, Microbiology; Laboratory or equivalent
  • 1-2+ years of experience in a lab environment in a local or international food, pharmaceutical or feed company.
  • Fluent in Dutch and French. Mastering of English a requirement
  • Knowledge of Food Safety management, HACCP management, GMPs (Hygiene practices, Sanitation, Environmental Monitoring, Pest Control etc) and GFSI certification schemes (BRC, FSSC 22000).
